Ungrateful Platoon Commander, Insensitive Leeder
I saw this pic at BigTalk [Link]I'm shocked that these words can come from a former Brigadier-General of the Singapore Armed Forces, the current Prime Minister of Singapore!
“If we make it (NS and Reservist for PR) a requirement, we would not get the people we wanted. Secondly, if they did serve NS at 30, 40 and 50 years old. I would not like to be their platoon commander.”
If I have not learned to be cool, calm and collected from my guru, Wisdom, the first words that should come from my mouth would be: "KNNMCCB" or, "Fcuk you, man!"
So why am I so bloody mad?
I was released from the bondage of NS and reservists' in-camp training almost 20 years ago at age 40! It hurts me to know that having been considered over the hill as a NSman at 30, I was still asked to waste my time to serve certain platoon commanders who did not appreciate my service.
I do not know the context at which such stupid statement came from a statesman but to belittle the contributions and sacrifices of thousands of NSmen who serves till 40 is appallingly sick! It is so sad to know that Singapore citizens who recite the Singapore Aspiration (Pledge?) are lesser mortals in Singapore than PRs who spice up the lives of elite Singaporeans!
Why such callous deed tears my guts out?
At this moment, my 18 month-old grand-daughter is yearning for her father. She is fatherless for 3 weeks because her 35 year-old dad (who is my son) is out of Singapore in some godforsaken jungle somewhere doing reservist training which his Platoon Commander (if he were PM Lee) does not appreciate because he's too old to be in NS.
It's all well and good when careless politician speaks of buying votes and fixing oppositions [Link] but to callously deride the sacrifices of so many true blue Singaporean NSmen is really asking for trouble.
NSmen and reservists are already disillusioned by ministers who make a mockery of nation serving by paying themselves millions; the 'white horse' classification of NSmen and the disadvantage they face in equal employment opportunity [Link].
Mr Prime Minister, why rock the boat further with such insensitivity?
Under the current economic and social condition in Singapore,
A grateful heart
A touch of kindness
A sense of solidarity
A caring demeanour
is what we expect from a leader.
A high falutin ingrate is furthest from our minds!
God bless Singapore.

This PM is looking more and more like a joke each day!
Those who served NS during the same period as PM Lee will vouch for his white-horse status and his meteoric rise to BG is a mockery to military service.
This sissy PM is way too presumptuous. In fact he should ask how many actually want him to be their platoon commander in a real combat scenario.
Either he would have taken cover or taken the first flight out. LOL
I had been sent to Thailand forICT for a month, back then when there was no mobile phone network. I lost a third of my business, my clients were taken from me and I had to start from scratch. Do the new immigrants have to put up with all these inconvenience while local born guys (suckers) suffer? Best thing was my employer (local bank) couldn't give a damn that it was my national obligations. This bullshit has to stop.
dumbass pinky loong
Same words came to my mind when I first read that.
Geez...we got somone who beats George W Bush.
Great read. Thanks Fish!
I too suffered work-wise because of annual ICTs (2-3 weeks!!) and IPPT-RTs (2 months!!). Because the govt also encourages a mindset that sees performance excellence in terms of quantity and ranking (which it mistakes for quality), this affected my output when set against expats and PRs. Best thing was my NATIONAL employer couldn't care less that it was my national obligation. When the crisis hit, I lost my job. I want to ask too: do the new immigrants have to put up with these inconveniences? Talking about their children is a red herring.
Majullah Singapura.
For many of us NSmen, we already see how NS counts for nothing in Singapore.
I thank God my child is a girl so that she can at least compete against foreigners without having her hands tied behind her back due to full-time and reservist NS liability.
The MIW have spoken and spoken clearly, Singaporean male citizens contributions are only worth a miserable $3,000 tax relief. If your effective tax rate is 10%, then your contributions and sacrifice through risking your life for your country is worth $300 dollars.
NSmen, remember this at the ballot box.
Majullah Singapura.
Same old reasoning.
If we make it a requirement we will not get the people we required.
If we have too many opposition MPs in Parliament he would have to spend all his time fixing them, even with so many ministers helping him.
If we do not pay well, we will not get the right people into Parliament.
Blah, blah, blah.
I do not know which is more jokingly funny. The one talking about half a brain or the one playing the same old 'unable to get' tune.
Really enjoying reading your article. I bookmarked your site and I do click on it each day to see for any new article. Please keep updating.
Thank you!
We should actually be grateful to Lee Hsien Loong. For his incompetence and his gang's arrogance, the people may finally be spurred to rise up and make the right choice at the upcoming elections.
Hmm, interesting.
Did you do your NS or reservist service at 30 ?
I really dont know of people who serve national service at 30.
Maybe he (or the speech writer) has forgotten that we male Singaporean are still doing reservist even when we are in our 30s.
I'm in NS now, and I'm afraid to leave it :(.
get laid dude. you've taken it wayyy out of context.
i wish i can live to see pap fallen apart with the lead of this stupid PM
since you already mentioned you do not know the origin of the context... then DONT take it out of context and make your own assumptions... get your facts straight first...
He is welcome to be my platoon cmdr. Our NS PC was also a white horse; the whole platoon is quite agreeable that such person will not last long if & when first encounter with the enemy. Of course the enemy might by some freak hit him first; so much the better.
These FTs can do a special course, then serve reservist in
- Police [bring back the Special Constabulary - those red lanyard guys]
- SCDF [ambulance attendance, help out at fire stations etc]
- ICA [help catch illegal immigrants, check vehicles at check points etc]
- NEA [help check mosquitoes]
Then they will serve yearly reservist incamp.
SO MANY THINGS FOR THEM TO DO AS RESERVISTS.
If you look at all these negative comments, you should be able to understand perfectly why PM Lee would not like to be their platoon commander.
And probably for all other age group if the mentality is the same.
A PC with the PM's kind of attitude towards his men will get fragged in no time during a war.
i think this is being dragged way out of context. if you bother to read the article, what PM lee was saying is that it is not feasible to draft in PR and new residents of first generations, ie foreginers who arrived from the 1980s and 90s into the army now, because and i quote : " we would not get the people we wanted" , meaning if you draft them in right now, you're going to send people in their 30s, 40s, get them to tekong on a boat and shave them bald. what sense is there in training them.
which leads on to his second sentence on " i would not like to be their platoon commander". To all who commented, reacted in anger, put yourself in a pulau tekong plt commander shoes, and ask are you willing to command a platoon of 30s, 40s, freshly shaven RECRUITS who probably had no prior military training, not in prime physical state, and asking them to do route marches, soc, 2.4km runs. Can you motivate them? Or even wake them up at 5.30 every morning to do 5BX. will they listen to us young 20 somethings fresh 2nd Lieutenants?
So from the original meaning of asking first generations PR to do NS, it has become PM not wanting to be platoon commander of NSmen in their 30s. A total contortion of everything, when there isn't even the faintest mention of NSmen within the paragraph, or the article
Quoting one sentence out of one article has dragged it totally out of the context
I don't see the contortion. Essentially he does not want those who are too old to serve NS, that's it. But he forgot there are NSmen who serve all the way to 40 yrs old and beyond.
For those who commented against PM's comments, are you really really serious about wanting first generation PR/citizens in their 30s or 40s to join NS as recruits ?
If thats what you have in mind, then u seriously need to re-think your logic ... you are too consumed by your KS mentality liao.
Singaporean parents should request National Service to be abolished and be replaced by regular forces.
patriot
NS need not be military in nature. That's what most people fail to see.
I agree with the sound-minded people. This is taken way out of context. It really depends whether you are looking at things from your individual perspective or at national interests. Some commented that NS, reservist is a waste of time, yet say that PR residents should be obliged to serve. If NS is a waste of time, why expect PRs to serve? Put in point blank, those who purport that idea simply want our country to be defended, yet are not willing to pay the cost. Double-standards. And PRs are already expected to serve NS, just not the older generation of PRs.
I'm with Anonymous@October 3, 2:24 AM. Those who agree with the PM fail to think out of the box like him. There are many ways of serving NS besides military defence: eg. peacekeeping, civil defence, emergency relief, community service, etc. Doesn't the PM also say he wants to integrate these people into the local community? Can you think of a better way? And, if national security is really an issue, then the PM should do something about the growing number of disgruntled ex-citizens who served NS and then migrate with everything that they know.
While I agree PM's context of NS became "NS + reservist" in big talk's link (where Fish got the article), I agree with Fish's gist that it probly sucks to be a S'porean male. I used to fret when staff had ICT in the middle of an IT project. It was near impossible to get a deferment cos Mindef cares less abt your project...used to wish we had more foreigners in the team..sorry to say that but delayed projects = unhappy clients = liquidated damages..
My PR friend used to have all the perks of S'poreans and refused to take up SG citizenship cos he said there was no benefit. Just before his son got called up for NS, the entire family gave up the PR and they left SG. They can still visit SG including the son. Compare that with another friend whose entire family gave up SG citizenship and applied for exemption for NS for their son who emigrated with the family when he was 9. They made a mistake of extending his SG passport when he first left and Mindef decided he needed to do NS cos he "benefitted from SG citizenship". The poor fella will be handcuffed/ imprisoned if he sets foot in SG. Is this fair ? The ex PR friend always laughed when he got invitations to take up SG citizenship. Guess he does have the last laugh...
Edmond,
If the new immigrant citizens are within legal age to do reservists duty, they should.
This way they will be true blue Singaporeans.
Serving as reservist in Police n NEA is a great way to integrate with locals.
This PM always utter nonsense and those whom had commented are right to say that behind his real intentions, he just want the FT, PR to boast the revenue for them
oPEN eyes and see there are so many ah tiong in poly and uni right now which are around age 20+ but they did not need to go ns and they get higher strandard of education faster than local or start work earlier than us while most local male are doing NS..is this fair..they should set a age limit..so those ah tiong also have to do NS for us...to DEFEND THE COUNTRY
We follow China.
ONE COUNTRY, TWO SYSTEMS.
LOLOL
Sweet ... the head of the government loudly confirming that FT have special priveleges that citizens do not. So why shouldn't prospective employers do the same.
OMG..perhaps he got 'mentored" by the crying minster. Sigh
>>NS need not be military in nature. That's what most people fail to see
EXACTLY...i'm fed-up with the MIWs. Nobody suggested sending 30s as recruit - as suggested by some, there are other "N.S" roles. When we ask for help in transport hike for aged - they claimed we're asking for FREE ride. When we ask they to review housing pricing - they claimed we wanted prices of 20 yrs ago...WTF

On first reading of this sentence, I also do not know what PM means.
Vote out the fag and his fucking party! LACKEY, may his cancer take him soon.
Feed emphasises of that paragraph might have slightly taken PM's words out of context... but guys... lets think again.
Firstly, regardless of the whole speech by PM or just that particular paragraph, it does not deny the fact that PM just jump into the defense of those PRs against its own NS serving males? Clearly his intention of his speech is to stand on the side of the PRs, hence we do not have to care about whether his statement is being taken out of context or not.
I do not agree with PM Lee's view about men in their 30s,40s,50s serving NS in the military. As some have rightly pointed out, many of us serve til 50 and beyond. In addition, there are many roles in the military where those in the 30 to 50 age group can be assigned.
It is all a question of reasonable fitness level and not about age when enlisting those in the 30 to 50 age group. Being the wimp and sissy that PM Lee is, he need look no further than the manner in which those elderly folks in their 70s to 80s eke out a living. So isn't it a freaking lame excuse for PM Lee to have reservations being platoon commander with men in the 30 to 50 age group under his care ?
The most important point to note in modern warfare is that superior weapons and strategies will decide many an outcome. A 50 or even 60 yr old man can still be very effective if he is trained to use a modern weapon and most importantly the bullet finds it target.
I wager that a 60 yr old man can compete with a 18 yr old to take PM Lee out from 300m with a M16, and how I wish he can be the target. LOL
He don't want be my platoon commander. But then, how many people who did Ns during his time want HIM as our platoon commander!?!
If this can be done by elimination; (1) If NS were more than having heads shaved or 5BX etc, but some form of commitment of time to the nation (eg construction brigade, civil defence, medical orderly, ambulance driver etc) where each age level of PR gave up as much time as the corresponding age level of citizen, to this country each year – some of the comment here should go away (2) If there were no annual reservist duty … some more posts here may disappear - without the yearly obligation, everyone plays with same size racket. (3) If NS or reservist duty were voluntary, like someone once wrote "in my country in Europe, the only difference between a citizen and PR is voting" … then many (if not all) comments here might not happen.
Instead of a case of statements taken out of context, could it be just attempts to fit a context into the statements? - Most people should prefer to just read the papers, snort a little, puff a little, put it down to get a sip of coffee, stacked them up ready for the karang-guni man, why this strenuously activity of thinking, putting letter in words, words into sentence and getting it post here? and all that after a full meal?
As for those people who complain about PM's words being taken out of context, KNOW THAT political discourses are ALWAYS taken out of context and used for different ends.
NOw, for an experience PM to make such a mistake.. speaks for himself.. He should fire whoever prepared the speech.
Get use to it people. They always talk without thinking. I am so use to it already. After all they always like to talk 1st... but never think at all. That why sometime after saying something that they can't back-up. They start to give excuse.
Get use to it people. This people always like to talk..... but never think. I am so use to it already.
Maybe in his mind, he is already thinking that he don't want to be the PM of those old citizen, people who cannot contribute to this country economically. That explain why there is a sudden shift of policies of recruiting large amount of PR and NC!
Read from another forum that children of PR don't have to do NS soon ? If this is true....i would be pissed...
This quote is taken WAY out of context. Children of PR's and 1st generation Singaporeans DO have to serve NS. I was one such person who went through NS. LHL may be a buffoon but come on, let's not give them more ammo than they already have. The MIW already think Singaporeans are whiny, shallow jerks, and half the comments on this post do nothing but prove that point.
@hades , PRs can give up residency to avoid kids doing NS. And they are free to visit SG after that. Singapore born males on the other hand cannot be exempted from NS - and cannot step into S'pore soil or they get handcuffed. Remember the Norgwegian army office and his brother who can't visit their parents in SG cos they didnt do NS in SG? So whether it's NS or reservist at 30 +, the point is S'pore born males get the raw end of the deal..
I'm almost going to finish reservist and luckily have not really been disadvantaged by the yearly training like some bros here. However it suddenly occured to me that if i were an 18 yr old graduating and going to NS soon, but my foreign classmates can join the workforce immediately or go straight to UNI, i'll be damn demoralised and fuming mad too!
Of cos must take out of context lah, so as to make FM2TF blog popular. No one likes to read a pro-PAP blog, even if it tells the truth, because truth is unexciting; no titillation; no consipracy.... :(
Hi Whiny Shallow jerks :)
If a Singapore born teen goes overseas and does not wish to do NS – he cannot step into Singapore soil and work here. He can't even transit here.
If a Singapore PR teen refuses to do NS and runs to USA – will he face the same consequence – to be blackmarked and if he returns to Singapore soil – put him into jail.
If the Singapore PR has better and wider options, then it is true – all Singapore males are stupid and foolish to be treated thus.
Guess this is a fact that many Singaporean are blind to.
you whiny jerks, suckers, you slave, working your butt to 'protect' your foreign PRs.

@xingrencha,
to be fair, I looked at the link to Big Talk and the (NS and Reservist) came from that blog. So Fish was not the one who took it out of context. In any case, his argument still holds - Singaporean men are still doing reservists way past their 40s. And now there's talk in CNA that the children of PRs need not do NS. If that happens, Singapore should just scrap NS totally. There is no justification especially when PRs get the same perks as citizens. Your assertion that Fish does this to improve readership on his blog is the biggest bs ever. He writes from the heart (albeit damaged). Out of curiosity, read your article on Zhang Yan Yan and let's just say it's neither "deep" nor "analytical"...Just think - we're asked to spend $10m of taxpayers money to help PRs / FTs integrate..and we're happy they go back to their motherland? And we give poor old folk $330 a month after debating if they eat in a hawker's center or restaurant and if it encourages a crutch mentality? If you want people to read your blog xingrencha, make it worth their time. We don't need another P65 blog to read, lol. For that I can go to ST interactive...
to xingrencha,
"no one likes to read a Pro PAP blog even if it tells the truth, because truth is unexciting "
Hey, use your brains lah if it is not damaged. Do you know what it means when you have no credibility ? that's right ! and I am talking about the PAP leadership.
That is why even if the pap leaders tell the truth, most will still doubt them, so it is the same for pro PAP blogs and their stooges. Can you now understand why S.T. is ranked 154th ? and from the way you post, you can pass off as a disciple of chua lee hoong.
We should really consider getting the FTs to do NS.
The truth is, when Singaporean males do their reservist, our ang mo bosses frown.
From their perspective, you probably bring in SGD 30-50k (a rough estimate if you are sales) a month. Compared to your pay of 2-3k, this return is high. However, if you go ICT for 3 weeks. BAM! sales go down. I (boss) employ you to work and bring in results, your ROI (returns on investment) is high, and I can well afford your salary. i did NOT pay for you to do reservist and I do NOT care if your govt can pay me back! Your absence brings more harm (def: no good at all) to the company.
Oh, whereas, the FT in the company, works for more or less same pay (assuming same position) and NO ICTs. Imagine, he brings in results, socialise (in your absence) with me. Who do you think i ll favor more? Promotion will go to FT.
Suck it Singaporean males.
I did part-time People's Defence Force NS for 3 years and then after NU graduation 2.5 years of full-time SAF NS and then 6 more months of SATO for further officers' training and umpteen Reservists in-camp training. When I was a Battalion 21/c and had to leave Singapore to work I got one exit permit exemption and they refused another as they wanted me back for reservist training at the age of 42!!! I had no choice but to give up my citizenship. That's what my "Platoon Commander" and his croonies did to a loyal Singaporean!!So everything was in vain.
Pinkie Loon is a joke and an incompetent ah gua and sissy paper general, as always.
NS men do not "serve their platoon commanders". They serve their country.
Unknown to Pinkie, if the platoon commanders are useless and incompetent, they will be shot in the back or fragged in their foxhole by their own men. This is the reality of the situation in combat.
We have the devil himself mascarading as our PM. He has grown so complacent taht he cannot even be bothered to think of good excuses to bluff us with. I pray damn hard that he can die of his cancer immediately.
LHL should learn from Confucious:
一言兴邦,一言丧邦
He better not be a commander - looking at the way he tried to destroy Singapore with immigrants. Who knows what enemy he has recruited because they brought him good GDP. In army, life is beyond GDP figure.
Bravo, what words..., a brilliant idea
Yesterday i bought viagra in [url=http://shoppharm.com]Online drugstore[/url].
On my surprise it works excellent! All the matter is that the price low, because I do not pay for the trade mark. That's all!
You can see explanations about it.
A generic drug (generic drugs, short: generics) is a drug which is produced and distributed without patent protection. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, generic drugs are identical bioequivalent range to the brand name counterpart with respect to pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties. By extension, therefore, generics are considered identical in dose, strength, route of administration, safety, efficacy, and intended use. In most cases, generic products are available once the patent protections afforded to the original developer have expired. When generic products become available, the market competition often leads to substantially lower prices for both the original brand name product and the generic forms. I don't think many would want to be under his command. Commanders like that get waxed at the first shot of war
I know a M-country citizen who becomes a PR of S-country so that his Tuition (School) Fee is the same as the citizens of S-country. After he gradates from school, he is force to serve NS for S-country. He attends BSLC from a NCO School, cross over to OCS & commission as an officer in S-country.
He says that after he has Serve And Fuck of from NS, he will go back to M-country and will not be staying in S-country but may work in S-country so that he can fuck off the reservist.
This is the comment with all the Fuck words from a commission officer with the rank of LT from S-country. This is a wonderful speech from a guy who is a PR & commission officer from S-country.
So this means that PR has a way to escape reservist while working in S-country but citizens of S-country have to waste their time off from work & getting the risk of being fire to serve their reservist. It is so ‘good’ to be a citizen of S-country.
I wonder what will happen if M-country pays him to train M-country Armed Forces & counterstrike S-country because S-country Armed Forces is train to defend from M-country attack.
S-country Government is really good in Training & Development for enemy from M-country to attack S-country. I wonder if M-country will give this comment: “Well done, S-country Government! Keeps up the good work!” It is so wise of S-country Government.
The people always get the government they deserve.
Well mate, its your generation that screwed us over; time and time again voting for them.
