Stupid & Stupider

Timing of HDB tax hike 'avoid bigger increases later'

F
ront Page headline of Straits Times on Monday, 23 Nov 2009 by Sue-Ann Chia, Senior Political Correspondent

Quote from ST:
Rear-Admiral (NS) Lui said: "The problem is, the longer you defer it, the larger the increase will be. . . if HDB prices continue to go up."

Hence, the Government has decided to raise the property tax "to reflect the prevailing movement of HDB prices and
also to give rebates", said Rear-Admiral Lui. (emphasis mine)

In Hollywood, we have actor Jim Carrey doing "Dumb & Dumber." In Singapore, we have actor (wayanger) doing "Stupid & Stupider".

Is the the current batch of mintsters treating Singaporeans as morons or are Singaporeans stupider than stupid to accept such logic?

Last I remember the GST increase from 5% to 7% to was to help the poor. Not too long after that, PAP Ministers had their million dollar pay hike with much arrogance and shameless justification of their self worth [Link]. I think the 2% GST increase lightens the burden of the poor less but enriches the millionaire ministers in PAP Government more.

To be beaten again by another HDB tax hike is one thing but to have our faces rubbed in again with such stupid (I cannot find a more diplomatic word) reason is beyond me.

Increase the property tax . . . so that you can give rebates? This must be the mother of all reasons! Just how screwed up can one get? If this isn't another male cow manure from a PAP mintster, I don't know what is.

In the second half of 2009, Singaporeans have learned that:
  • Singapore Pledge is merely an Aspiration
  • Singapore is not a cuntry, but a city
  • HDB Tax is increased so that the Government can give give rebates
And I thought "Mee Siam Mai Hum" was funny... or was it the $400,000 to rename Marina Bay... Marina Bay [Link]?

  1. YIN & YEW

A tourist was visiting a temple in Singapore when he noticed a statue, with two faces, a man and a woman, back to back, by the altar.

He asked the monk what was the significance of the two.

The monk explained that in the Chinese belief of yin and yang, positives must always be balanced by negatives, and having the statue with two sides ensures that the universal balance is maintained.

"This statue of the woman is the Goddess of Mercy, Kuan-Yin."

"What about the other one?" asked the tourist.

"The one with the man's face is the God of No Mercy, Kuan-Yew.."

  2. With this kind of ministers, who pay themselves obscene salaries and take the citizenry as fools, we the people are in for inexpressible sufferings for a long long time, unless we seriously stand up to do something.

If we are collectively weak, then individually each of us can pray for The Divine to help us.

From now on I will diligently pray for Divine intervention every morning when I rise and every night before I go to be.

"May the Power of the Divine help all of us, the common people of Singapore, to get rid of the cause of our sufferings."

  3. The "divine power" has named the cause of your suffering as laziness. Thus, they decree that your life long commitment is to national labour as a form of worship and duty for blessing you with health, wealth and public housing.

  4. Fish, I do find your post to be
    sarcasticly funny although a sad
    reflection of the reality.
Yes, they have been treating us like morons when they are really
dumb ones to make such a reasoning.
Just look at the Rear Admirer's picture on your post.
Doesn't he looks like the contorted
    comical face of Jim Carrey's?

  5. If it was not about a serious issue, the reasoning might be really funny. I am truly amazed that the government can come up on a daily basis with logic that is so twisted up that some point in time, they must have found it ridiculous themselves. Then again I might be wrong. If you keep on repeating a lie long enough, you will really believe it to be true yourself.

They really think that they have the monopoly on logic and we were all born yesterday.

  6. Feed Me To The Fish,
please stop making fun of the gov because it is no laughing matter especially the same reason for property tax will be the same reason for next GST increment, that is
INCREASE GST TO GIVE GST REBATES !

INCREASE INFLATION TO GIVE INFLATION REBATES !

INCREASE ERP TO GIVE ERP REBATE !

INCREASE MIW'S PAY TO GIVE MORAL AUTHORITY !

INCREASE TAX TO GIVE TAX REBATE !

INCREASE "SHIT" TO GIVE "SHIT" REBATE !

  7. The comment that GST is meant to help the people is interesting.

I had a friend quite knowledgeable about economics explain to me that the GST is a "regressive tax", meaning that it hurts the poor more than it hurts the rich.

For example, the expenses on basic necessities does not depend too much on income. The tax on expenditure on basic necessities will turn out to be a bigger proportion on lower income groups.

In the USA and Canada, and perhaps many other places, the GST is not applied to basic items like food (though you certainly get charged a lot if you eat at a restaurant). The Worker's party made the suggestion to follow these practices to not apply GST to basic items like rice, but these suggestions are falling on deaf ears.

  8. Mr See-no-porn would be a perfect rival to Jim Carey, if they were to have a sequel to 'Dumb and Dumber'.

He has already made many a gaffe during his term in office.

Hey, they also called him 'cyber sheriff' hor!

  9. A good choice indeed Mr Fish, to use Jim Carrey for comparison with Lui.

Jim Carrey is a moron in "reel" life while Lui is one in real life.

Jim does what he does because he wants his audience to think he is dumb,
while Lui on the otherhand thinks his audience is dumb.

Jim pretends to be dumb while Lui otherhand is not aware he is dumb.

Jim is mindful his paycheck depends on his performance
while Lui on the otherhand is mindful he need not give a damn.

Jim can only meet god in "reel" life while Lui on the otherhand
can meet god anytime in real life.

Jim has to contort his face to look dumb while Lui on the otherhand perpetually looks dumb without trying.

Mr Fish, should ever by some luck I get to meet Jim Carrey, I think Jim will say this to me :
"Hey pal, I heard so much about Spore and amongst you chaps there is a comedian who can give me a run for the money. Ain't that great!"

My reply, "Not great Jim because this comedian is a politician.
Wouldn't it be a tragedy for your country Jim, if too many politicians are either dumb or dumber?"

  11. This fellow is obviously a dud. They don't produce scholars like they used to be. The really good ones have migrated or are working overseas for MNCs.

Remember, LKY in the last GE was saying that these were second or third rates?

Our first rate brains have already flown away or will go soon. Now, replaced by influx of third rate foreign talents. Carrying on like this, how to be two steps ahead of Malaysia? Malaysia will catch up in time to come, and she will take back Singapura for sure. It is only a matter of time.

Politically, once Singapore is infested with PRC Chinese, it becomes an issue and an excuse for Malaysia to 'invade' when she is militarily and financially strong enough to do so.

Moreover, Indonesia may also be eying and waiting for an opportunity to act in her favour.

    Either way, Singapore is doomed!

FMTTFish, glad to have found your blog.

Waiting for your comments on the latest remark by our dear DPM in an economic forum, that reducing GST will required changes in systems and hence increase business costs.

I fell off my chair and spilt my morning kopi.

  18. The real concern is how your kids and grandchildren are being educated in schools. Is there critical thinking in the class room? Australia and New Zealand has Philosophy for Children to promote democratic reasoning as well as critical thinking skills in their subjects at elementary, junior hight and senior high levels. Singapore has introduced it only in the private (supposedly independent) schools such as RI and ACSI. The heartland schools do not receive it at all as part of their curriculum. Yio Chu Kang Sec has a waterdown version. Our kids can't think. It's no surprise you get ministers speaking bad English and poor logic, appealing to Singaporeans' sense of ignorance. The hubris for this way of thinking arises when you start controlling vast media of communication. They want to jump on you when you seem to have good reasons to refute their points. The reason they do so is because they control the avenues of communication and are surprise that you could criticise them. How could you critise them when they maintain that they have an upperhand in the possession of information?

  19. Dear Feed Me To The Fish

I hope you are well. I have been following your blog and thoroughly enjoyed it. It has been over one month now since your last post and I could not help feeling concerned, knowing that you have had heart problems before. I am sure I am not the only one concerned. If you are ok, do write a short note. If there is anything we can help with, do tell.

    Wishing you all the best,
