Board & Squeeze for Progress

MM Lee Kuan Yew said: "Let me explain what happens when we make progress. HDB prices go up, private home (prices) go up, all asset prices go up. Everybody finds he owns something more valuable in the house, his shares are worth more and he can live a good life," said Mr Lee. "Of course we have to put up with more crowded trains, more crowded buses, (but) it cannot be helped. [Link]

CEO of SMRT Corporation Saw Phaik Hwa said:
“People can board the train – it is whether they choose to” which caused an irate customer to write to her [Link]

If I were her PR Manager, I'd advise her to use the following video [Link] to
put her squeezed victims (champion grumblers) to silence.

Is this the price to pay for progress?

Are you ready to be squeezed like sardines to enjoy the good life?

If this is progress, please give me back my old kampung hut built on flood-proof stilts.

Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam
Where the deer and the antelope play,
Where seldom is heard, a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

Home, home on the Range;
Where the deer and the antelope play;
Where seldom is heard, a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

  1. so glad u'r back.

    yes, it's like old times. like the 1960s and 1970s to be exact. times when many couldn't find work, when homes were too pricey, when goods were too expensive, when there were floods, and when we went to a CC to watch TV shows, like we'r now doing for the World Cup!! so deja vu...

  2. Back to the old days?

    The good old days are totally destroyed by technocrats and modern elites that know nothing about livings except counting monies. These bloody fools live stupid live and think they are great.

  3. If everybody makes as much as the old man and his family, relatives, colleagues and well-heeled friends, sure, prices of everything can just go up.

    It benefits them the most as everything is affordable to them. They just pay themselves more, something which you and me do not have the luxury of having. For investment purposes, consumption, enjoyment, nothing is beyond reach.

    If you own just a HDB flat, and it increase in price by leaps and bounds, what difference does it make to you and your living standard? Sure, its value goes up, but so does every HDB flat owned by everybody else.

    You sell high, you may buy even higher. It may even come out worse for you. Sure, you will own something more valuable after this, but it could also be a curse in disguise, a millstone around your wretched neck that may force you to work until 80 years old.

  4. those were the days my friend,
    we thought they'd never end...

    we'd live the life we choose,
    we'd fight and never lose...

    then the busy years went rushing by us,
    we lost our starry notions on the way...

    perhaps the selected lyrics from Mary Hopkin's song compliment your post, Mr Fish.

    in the name of progress under MIW,
    the over priced HDB pigeon holes can never replace the wooden house on stilts with ample space, nor the fancy MRT replace my trusty bike plus freedom to ride on any damn road....not least, influx of aliens by the millions and counting!

  6. I'm delighted to be back and I'm grateful that I'm not fed to the fish as yet. So far, so good.

    I'd like to thank Wedding Singer for reminding me of Mary Hopkins' "Those Were The Days". Time flies and it was in the late 60's and early 70's that my mates and I refer to this song to reminisce our teenage years.

    Of course, the power that is will accuse us of being complacent useless sentimental nostalgics who are too daft to understand economics and the importance of foreign imports. But hey, we can agree to disagree.

    If attracting gamblers and prostitutes is the way to prosper and progress, they can keep their progress to themselves. If a Mint$ter can ask, "What do you want? 3 meals in a hawker centre, foodcourt or restaurant?" when help was needed to increase the $290 monthly assistance given to the poorest of the poor, I'd ask, "How many people do you want in S'pore? 5 million? 6 million? 7 million? Or until the whole Singapore sinks?

    For all the noise they make, they still do not understand that it not that we hate the imported foreigners. It's the stupid overcrowding policy that's making us frustrated, breathless and helpless. And their greed for personal glory, recognition and silverwares that they have no qualms in buying adds on to our misery.
