'Ethical Limit' on "FaceBook"?

Did you read of the judgement made against Dr Susan Lim for overcharging her patient from Brunei? "Doctors face 'ethical limit' on charges . . . SMC considered striking Dr Susan Lim off medical registry" ST 31 Aug 2012.

This gave me a funny thought.

If doctors must stick to an 'ethical limit' when charging their patients, must ministers do the same when charging taxpayers for ministerial services? I guess they did with the Gerard Ee Ministerial Salary Review with Mercer earning $840,000 from the exercise.

If the services of a doctor help patients get better, should not the services by ministers help citizens get better too? Are Singaporeans getting better? You be the judge.

Maybe, just maybe, Singaporeans aren't getting better because of the neglect from ministerial services. Ministers in Singapore nowadays are so busy playing with their computer that they may not have time to minister. Just look at Facebook! Seems like any PAP minister worth his salt must have a FB account accumulating 'likes', 'fans' and 'followers'.

And what do they write in the FB? Bragging about their achievements like:
  • how fast he builds 'market subsidised' flats to make his predecessor look worse
  • how he paid only $8 for a heart bypass operation
  • how hard they work and how many residents they meet at their 'meet-the-people-session'
  • how happy they are with the support and applause they get in their speeches to the 'dafts'
  • how they help residents not to be 'racists' and 'xenophobic'
  • how happy they are answering questions and comments of their FB followers
  • how thoughtful of them to invite bloggers to tea and being grateful for tau huay?
Self praise?

With ministers facebooking all the time, who is governing Singapore?

Foreign talents?

If "SMC considered striking Dr Susan Lim off medical registry", is it time for Singaporeans to consider striking ministers off the governing registry?

Or have we to 'repent' for what we did to George Yeo and Lim Hwee Hwa in Aljunied GRC in 2011?

Funny thought could get serious. Or has 'noise' turn into valuable soundbites?

  1. Not all bloggers got invited lah. It is usually the same few again and again.
They do not like fish, bear, diary keeper and rar etc.
Singaporeans shud be grateful that ministers are having conversations with the citizens through Facebook. They do not stop You from speaking your mind tho they can moderate or delete yr posting. And if You are converted after talking to them, You are free to do so. Some bloggers do seemed to have been won over, nothing wrong with that. It just showed that the ministers are convincing, nothing more.

Remember that in Sin, the Law is legislated by Law Makers to ensure ethical behavior. Wat is ethical or not is not for the people to say.

But no, we will not tell you what that limit is.
    It's a "secret"?

  4. Ethics is best self administered. How many jokers are really ethical enough to say, hey, I am taking too much for doing so little or doing fuck all?

Only the jokers know how much they are taking for not contributing. Where is the conscience? Or where is the heart?

  6. Fish,
you are right to point out the MIW have been overcharging citizens just like what Dr Susan Lim had done with her royal patient.
However the similarity ends here, because in Susan's case her patient could easily engage another physician while sporeans have been deprived of suitable choices to represent them.
For example, sporeans voting in a GRC are forced to accept duds in the team.

Having said, I believe the MIW are the best examples to illustrate whatever unethical behaviour one can think of.
Abusing the ISA, MSM, SPF, Judiciary, etc, by ensuring their subservience, cheating in elections, their MPs not speaking up for voters in parliament, avoiding accountability for their failed policies, passing laws to alter interpretation of our constitution without a national referendum, condoning nepotism and cronyism....

It begs the question, can such unethical behaviour be construed as crimes against Singaporeans ?

did i not mention cheating in elections? do you understand what is gerrymandering ?
do you understand the outcome of using the MSM to tarnish image of your competitors ? do you even have the slightest idea who has the advantage with the GRC system couple with increase in election deposit ? can you project how this can be further abused ?

take all the above into consideration including elimination of competitors and there is really nothing to crow about when talking about "the voters had a choice....."

ps: the MIW can never ever be trusted. period.

  13. Doctor has no ethic! If I see a doctor for some ailment and I do not get better after a few days, can I ask for my money back or another diagnosis free? No right!
But if I send in my bike for repair and it is not carried out properly I can go back to the mechanic to have it properly done up at no additional cost.

  14. Dear Anon @3.11pm.

No doubt at all that the People In White cannot be trusted. A point that almost all netizens will agree.
    And
many, if not most Singaporeans are aware of gerrymandering and smearing of Alternative Parties and their members.
The above however, did not disqualify Alternative Parties from contesting in the GE. The Last GE was contested nation-wide. It did not result in voters choosing Alternative Party Candidates. 60% voted for PAP and that proved that despite all the known tactics, the voters had made their choice.

There was no dispute about the Result, hence, be it duds or benign calibres, the Voters had made their choice. It is just not right to call the choice of the people duds, period.

That is not really fair to say so. PAP need to tell us how many foreigners are converted to citizens first before humming the same tune.

  16. We can talk and talk here but this problem of incompetency will never go away. Remember Animal Farm? When we are facing a common problem, we rally togather to solve the problem e.g. drive away the master. Come a period of euphoria and a set of new leaders take over. Same things appear. That is why America do not allow its leader to government more than two terms. Something we can also consider.

  17. The services of Ministers here do not help Singkies get better, they help themselves and their cronies get better. Ethics has its roots in moral values and conscience - do you expect them to place an ethical limit around themselves, when this circumscribes their self-interests? But being hypocrites they will preach this to others - a code of conduct on the internet, to show big heart and generosity to others, etc ad nauseum....

Sylvia Lim said in 2007 that it was unconscianable to raise Ministerial salaries - and they went ahead anyway. Where is the ethics and conscience? The purpose of government is to serve the people, not yourselves.

i don't follow the last part of your argument when you imply that because 60% voted for the incumbents, it is therefore not right to say their choice are duds.

so far how many of these duds have spoken up for ordinary sporeans ?

so far has the lives of ordinary sporeans improve with the duds in 'absolute' control of our country ?

  22. A media crackdown is on the way, remember to backup and archive
all data in safe storage to ensure your data's intergrity.

"Propaganda and Framing During the War in Iraq
Framing played a major part in the opinion of the war in Iraq. The people of
Iraq and their allies had a completely different view of the war than did the
people of America and our allies. The media here in America was somewhat
misleading. The American media and many allies cited military conflict and human
interest as the frames for the events we were being told about. The
justifications were, of course, removal of Saddam, weapons of mass destruction,
and Iraqi freedom. All the destruction and death was understated and played down
here in America to keep our support. That’s how propaganda and framing works.

    The End Result
The media focused on episodic frames rather than explaining the bigger picture
with the entire cultural, social, and political context to help us understand
the truth. In the end, this just brings about less informed citizens and less
understanding among countries and among those at war and those at home.

Lack of Connectivity Breeds Propaganda and Framing
With a lack of connectivity to news, internet, and resources from around the
country and world, the media and the government have more power. They give the
public their side of the story and gain their support. Without any other sides
of the story, any other opinions, any other views, etc., the public doesn’t have
anything to counter what their being told and is more likely to just trust and
support it. This all leads to and support military dictatorships and similar
military movements. It becomes a cycle. .........." unquote
