It's no glory taking this government money.

In "More seniors get public assistance",Straits Times of 20, Nov 2008 reported that Madam Lim, 88, gets $330 a month under the Public Assistance scheme. The widow has eight daughters and a son, but has lost touch with them.

I hope the $330 is enough to pay for Mdm Lim's 3 meals at hawker centre, rent, utilities and healthcare expenses.

Mdm Lim, who lives in a sparsely furnished 0ne-room rental flat, said she would rather work if she could. She said in Hainanese, "It's no glory taking this government money."

Anyone can debate on how Mdm Lim who has eight daughters and a son reached this stage of poverty. Lack of filial piety? As we don't know, who are we to judge?

Mr Chia Shi Take wrote "Parent would rather suffer and die in silence than to sue". Having done the deed of going after people with Kangaroo T-Shirts, I was thinking if AG Walter Woon can help. If he finds cause in his investigation, he can go after his own Act and help Mdm Lim apply for Maintenance of Parents Act.

I do not know Mdm Lim but I respect her for her dignity and courage when she said she'd rather work. It goes to show that not everyone likes to take advantage of the government's reluctant assistance.

If goverment ministers can sponge off Singaporeans with their million dollars salary, paying Mdm Lim $330 a month is chicken feed. It's no big deal but I'm amazed that Straits Times takes half of Home Page 3 to blow the government's trumpet?

With so much negative news - DBS's retrenchment, Town Councils' $16,000,000 "eyes open" 'sinking' funds and Lehman's minibombs - that's detrimental to the government's first world standard, I guess they have to show some.

So let's show the glory of a 1st world government that cares!

If Mdm Lim takes no glory collecting the $330, do ministers take glory in collecting their millions?

Count With Me Singapore.

Well said !! Very pai-seh that we pay so much to get good governance but they lose so millions (billions?) for us - all the bailouts, ABC learning etc. Over here in NZ , the opposition became the gahmen and life goes on....head of opposition gets NZD200k+ . PM gets close to NZD400k (recent pay rise which the new gahmen is very pai-seh about cos it was a legacy of previous gahmen. New Finance Minister says they will not have such pay increases in the near future for any public position...The problem in SG is that there is no accountability from the powers that be....

This greedy PAPies gov will never satisfied with their pay, they will ask for more if economy is good and compare with the top 10 earners, when economy is bad as happen now most of the top earners (Foreign Corpn)CEOs get their pay cut, our top paid ministers n mps keep mum. Anyway they are not going to bring their wealth along when kick the bucket

Better don't ask them to have a pay cut because when the economy turns around they may ask for another substantial increase beyond imagination. Please, tolong, pai toh.

Personally I am happy the government has relaxed the rules and allow more people to apply for it.

And I feel there should be no shame in applying for it, compared to jumping into Tiger dens or MRT tracks.

"Happy government let people apply for it"? $330 per month? Must be joking. Btw, the author have not even touch on qualification to apply for the support. How many of the needies actually successed in getting it? Do they need to fill in tonnes of paper work to get it (mind you that a lot of these people can't even read)? Maybe that is why they did not bother to go for it!

How about how many Singaporean that is in need know of this pay out? Our pappies are well known for red tapes, can see can feel and cannot touch! There is a common saying on the ground, government take money from you fast, you take money from them, wait long long!

How naive can Singaporean be by the way, no offences. When can we Singaporean wake up and ask pappies go to fly kites? They are bunch of monkeys Which sometime I think those that voted for them deserved to be screwed hard! "Thank you" very much if you happened to be one of them who voted the crowns! Minority of the Singaporean owe it to YOU!

Dr. Enough

truth about our forefathers . . they refuse to be beggars. problem now is that our gahmen treat and encourage us to be beggars by giving handouts. why can't we live with some dignity like our older generations. make the gahmen system better for all so that none of us need to beg ! we are moving from first world to thrid world nation !

This is very mean to say and as a normal human being, I would not say this to a fellow human being. HOWEVER, I am not talking to/about normal human beings. I am talking about very greedy ones and therefore, I hope they enjoy accumulating all that wealth... the more the merrier... and then I hope they all find hell before they get to spend their wealth... each and every single one of them... but before they all face the devil, let their children all marry non-graduates from other races!!

The government and town council thinks nothing of losing billions of dollars in risky investment but will not even increase the spending on these people. They may argue it on the basis on increasing the incentives for these people to find work, but come on, some of these old folks are so poor and old and the economy is so bad, what work is there for them?

Yeah, I am glad I stop work because why work so hard & pay more TAXES for gahmen to squander them away. I feel sorry for the super rich knowing their taxes will go to fill their pockets not enough but also to gamble them away. Worse than losing in IRS casinos. Better send these clever investment gurus of TEMASEK to go for gambling counselling before Temasik get bailout following SILLY-bank. Wow! billions in the drain is small peanut compare to $330 pm. Tew Le Cho Ha!
