The Real Quitters!

The younger generation in Singapore have often been criticized and ridiculed for being spineless and taking soft options when faced with challenges. I think this general perception is not fair. Young or old; rich or poor, black, white, yellow or brown; people of different or no religion; there are those who are spineless wimps who quit easily and there are those with fortitude to take challenges and do whatever it takes to pick themselves up again whenever they fall. So that they do not fail themselves and forsake their faithful followers!

Remember the bloke who promised us Swiss Standard of Living? The same guy who insulted Singaporeans by calling them 'quitters' and 'fair-weather friends' because they decided to reside elsewhere. Funnily, this man was put to silence when he realised that he was putting his own daughter in a bad light!

If I were a PAP supporter in Aljunied GRC, I would be most dejected and disillusioned by the disappearance of George and his company of 'fair weather politicians'. What happens to the spirit of stand up and fight? They say, "old soldiers never die, they just fade away'. Sadly so, the Brigadier General, Minister and Mayor in Singapore are different. They simply throw in the towel after losing one round! They deserted their supporters by not sticking around and preparing for the next election in 2016. Are they wrong in abandoning ship? Are they right? I honestly don't know.

However 3 thoughts come to mind:
  1. They are not really politicians
  2. Their passion for politics has waned
  3. They realised that they are in bad company and grateful for this escape route
What has happened tells me something about
  • The culture of politics we have in Singapore
  • The meaning of service and loyalty
  • The Moral and the Compass that will detrimentally or positively impact us as a nation
My writing here is not to criticise George and his company for quitting. If I were him, I may just do the same if point 1., 2. or 3. of above applies.

So why did I write what I wrote here? To keep my brain at work and to find out if thoughts like mine are in the heads of others.

Thank you for sticking around and may 2012 bring you enough to be in flow!

Another thought that comes to mind: the conviction and commitment the (wo)men in white have.

Thank you for throwing light on "the real quitters".

Agreed. They are easily beaten! Remember Seet Ai Mei - 1st woman Cabinet Minister. After her defeat what did she say? "I wanna go home!" ( and cry? ). Then she "hilang" and vanished into the air! You call these ppl politicians? More of opportunists I suppose. Thank you Datuk Ikan for opening our eyes.

As I said before, the PAP either as a political party or in monopolished business, they never have been competetive.

You are not alone. I have the same thoughts!!

Let's not forget BG George Yeo's virtual 'handwringing' vow to be wholly involved in transforming his party at the height of and crucial moment of the hustings!

So what has happened post-GE 2011? All cleanly and completely forgotten? Water under the bridge? Or, water down 'ducky' George's back?

You are quite right to describe them as 'fair weather' politicians I would add that they are also two-dimensional opportunistic and mercenary to boot. It is apparent that they have voluntarily put themselves to pasture which also suited the party who obviously don't believe in losers even those of past-ministerial calibre. That also says a whole lot about the real calibre of these people - basically used sub-standard with frayed strings that the puppet master can no longer pull effectively from behind!

Good riddance, we all say and the PAP seems to agree too! ROFL.

I totally agree with you on the three points. He lost Aljunied GRC and it is his dream exit route
It is the best thing ever happened to George Yeo and, obviously,he is laughing to the bank..

I agree.
After I learned that George Yeo and his GRC team were retiring from politics ... my first thought was chicken shit.

I think all the politicians from the Opposition shows more persistence, desire, courage and heart to serve Singapore.

Anybody who knows Chiam See Tong's history will know how he persisted before he finally won Potong Pasir.

You get what you pay for.
You pay high salary to attract your talent.
You get talent who will only stay around if there is high salary.

If Singapore ever gets invaded, I wonder how many of these PAP politicians and generals will stick around to fight for Singapore.

Even more revealing.

Aljunied GRC.
No young PAP rising star has stepped forward to replace George Yeo.
Guess none of the junior superstars want to be associated with failure.
They still expect hand-holding.

Beware these fair-weather junior superstars from the Party Against People.
They are probably quitters.

Better support Opposition parties.
They have displayed heart, courage, persistence and desire over many years to fight for Singaporeans.
Pro-Opposition is to be Pro-Singapore.

i think point 3 is very valid. If i am Georgie i will leave. No point. We all know Georgie or at least the impression gather is that he is basically of good intentions.

George Yeo (Transformer Man), 20 Feb 1994, said:

“Remember your place in society before you engage in political debate…
Debate cannot (de)generate into a free-for-all, where no distinction is made between the senior and junior party…

You must make distinctions -
What is high, what is low, what is above, what is below,

and then within this, we can have a debate, we can have a discussion…
people should not take on those in authority as ‘equals”

Singapore will do well to have politicians serving the people; instead we have people who think they're politicians who think they're serving the people.

If Hougang is any indication, I would think that Aljunied GRC will remain in opposition hands for some time.

No PAP big guns dared to make an attempt to contest in Hougang for a long time, leaving comedian Eric Low to muddied the water for several elections and losing at every try. If Chiam had not vacated Potong Pasir, he would still be the MP there for sure, because the PAP dared not put up a more credible candidate to contest that seat beside Sitoh.

The same thing will happen in Aljunied GRC. As for rising PAP stars coming to Aljunied GRC, no way. They only want a guaranteed route into Parliament and Aljunied GRC is the wrong stepping stone for them. Probably a few old fish still wallowing in the filthy pond may come to Aljunied GRC in 2016 just to be sacrificial lambs.

To be very frank, Hougang is unlikely to go under PAP again. Not even with LKY as a candidate. the old man is too aloft to participate and lost to opposition.
